While drooling over pictures of DeSoto Adventurers and Studebaker Hawks today, I wondered what manufacturers of yesteryear that the opposphere preferred.

Do you dream of cruising down main street in a convertible 442 or picking on Chevrolets in a GTO at stoplights?

Or would you rather scare poor people off the street while being chauffeured in your Dusenberg or Auburn?

A scenic drive across spain in a Hispano-Suiza or Pegaso might be more your style, but whatever it is leave a comment and post pictures. Some information about the company and its cars might be appreciated if you think many people might not know much about it.

The question is not what brands you think should still be in business, but rather what defunct brands you enjoy seeing/driving/dreaming about the most.

Let’s live in the past for a bit.

Haha! Bait and switch. Swapped it with Mitsubishi because it makes a better joke. And honestly they’re closer to being defunct than Toyota is by a long shot.

Gilbern Sports Cars Ltd.

They only made two models and one prototype.. existed from 1959 to 1973.. but one of my ultimate dream cars is a Gilbern Invader (like the green one in the first picture).

They’re very similar for sure, even if the size is very different. How much were NSU influenced by the Corvair? Most West German cars were influenced by American cars at that time, so I guess quite a bit.

Welsh sports cars. Haha, That’s awesome.

They use BMC and Ford parts too, so they’ll be easy to find replacement parts and repair.

If they are reasonably priced, then you know how to dream. They even came in an estate body style.

I know.. I just love Gilbern.. sure, not the prettiest cars ever made, but I fell in love the first time I saw one.

The Corvair was pretty influential in terms of styling to begin with if I’m not mistaken.

It would be interesting to compile a list of cars that could have been influenced by it, but it would probably be lengthy and exhaustive.

Are you in Europe? Because that would explain why I’ve never seen one.

Pretty doesn’t really matter as long as it has the cool factor, which Gilbern clearly does.

I’m in Norway :) I’ve never seen a Gilbern here though, but I saw one on a trip to England a few years back.

For me, it’s a tie between Mercury and Packard. Most years, Mercury just looked better than Ford and were a little better equipped. Even after they moved down-market, Packards were well-built, solid, classy cars.

There are some die-hard, old-school Packard fans that swear the cars built by the Studebaker-Packard Corporation are not any good.

But every Studebaker-Packard vehicle I’ve had any association with was way better than a lot of the competitors from the Big 3 and the companies that went on to become AMC.

An old Mercury Colony Park station wagon and a Monterey with the Breezeway window are both on my ever growing list of wantings.

The move down-market I referred to was during the 1930’s, when they started building cars that were within reach of people who were reasonably well-heeled rather than extremely wealthy. I don’t know anything about the post-merger cars, but I’d be wary of anything built in South Bend that late in the game.

The post-merger Studebakers were comparable to anything else being built at the time, so I imagine that the Packards would be at a decent level of quality.

Studebaker left South Bend around 63 because of money anyway. That really sucked for South Bend for what I understand, it was mostly a manufacturing town.
